Dragon Nest MMO Review

March 18, 2015 by

The overall visual look is cartoonish (anime style) with a touch of SD which is one of three appeals. Much of the landscape is static but well rendered. Some aspects like grass and flowers interact with your character like swaying and rustling if you run thru it. Even if my computer can handle way better graphics, there’s only 3 settings and the highest setting looks more like low. The in-game music is good but their theme songs are epic. For example:

The second appeal is the combat system. No tab targeting here. You aim and destroy enemies with your explosive, arcade style abilities. It’s a button masher’s dream. Don’t take it to mean there’s zero strategy involved, though most of the young demographic that play the game tend to hack ‘n slash their way thru content with sheer brute force. Funny Disney’s Little Mermaid Comment Found @youtube

December 29, 2014 by

The comment to a Buzzfeed video about Disney Pricesses by Boo I Scare You:

Ok, Little Mermaid rant here.

1. Ariel says that she’s fifteen (or sixteen, not quite sure), and that she’s not a child anymore. Open your eyes, Ariel.
2. Ariel is in love with a man, purely because SHE THINKS HE’S HANDSOME. She has never even met him, yet she becomes obsessed with him.
3. She thinks she can get a man who she has never met to kiss her within 3 days, WITHOUT TALKING. The worst part about it? HE’S GOING TO.

The punchline by KoKabegami:

You just described half of the sophomore and junior girls in my high school…

Paying retail price for an MMO is a scam

June 5, 2014 by

(Not hating on World of Warcraft. This is an opinion about the current business model used by MMO games that require retail purchase and subscription fee.)

I’m calling out MMO’s for retail pricing their “game” when it’s not really a conventional retail video game. Traditionally when you buy a video game, you get a working copy of game. You pay for it then download/install/insert it into whatever gaming device you own and you play it. That’s the traditional model; however, MMOs double dip and make you pay twice. You pay for a retail copy of a game you can’t play. For the privilege of playing you have to pay a subscription fee. That’s like buying Assassin’s Creed then paying a subscription to access and play the content. Read the rest of this entry »

Disney’s “Paperman” emotive like a Japanese anime

Trying to reach her with a paper airplane.

Trying to reach her with a paper airplane.

Japanese anime run the gamut of styles and themes but they also devote a lot of time into quiet stories that try to capture real emotions like “3 centimeters”. Japanese taste and sensibility is reflected in Miyazaki animations. He will often contrast something beautiful with something ugly such as a breathtaking landscape panoramic with warplanes destroying a city in the background (Howl’s Moving Castle). Some of the most dramatic moments is captured in silence, a technique under-utilized by western animation houses. Disney animations of today tend to pander the same stereotypes and boring visuals which was once amuck with fresh ideas during the early days of animation. Remember the one lump or two joke? What about punching a stack of wood causing it to rearrange into a house? You get a gold star if you remember the animation series that sported those visuals. Read the rest of this entry »
