Old news about plagerism by Gene Simon’s son

It started with “Selling fanart at Artist Alley…Plagerism? | Facebook” > “Calling for legal action against Nick Simmons for plagiarism of other works” > a Naruto illustration ripoff > side-by-side comparison and overlay of Bleach plagiarism @Bleachness > “…Douchebag Plagerist, Responds to Allegations of Douchbag Plagiarism by Rob Bricken” > and damning proof from Deviant Art

To summurize, Simmon’s son hawked a comic book of stolen material; a frankenstien of traced and stolen art, dialogue, and plot from popular japanese comics and art communities.  He kinda reminds me of a kid who copied all the cool stuff he likes and made it into a comic without thinking about the consequences.

The news is about a year old but a poster by the name of  superbot400 (unfortunately the original post is deleted) first spotted the plagerism in Incarnate by the ex-KISS member’s son.  It spread to Bleach Asylum where it went viral in the manga/anime community.  His son basically stole entire panels, dialog, and characters from manga, anime, and even Deviant Art submissions.

“Concerns were raised in late February 2010 that Nick Simmons had plagiarized character designs, fight scenes, plot segments, dialogue, poses and expressions from both professional and amateur artists, from both several published manga, the most notable being Bleach, and from art communities such as DeviantArt.” sauce

The number of artists he stole from may never come to light.  People may think what’s the big deal?  He’s just another wannabe manga artist copying a popular style.  See above and read Rob Bricken’s short article.

Plagiarism means

  • to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one’s own
  • to use (another’s production) without crediting the source
  • to commit literary theft
  • to present as new and original an idea or product derived from an existing source.

– Miriam-Webster Online Dictionary, sauce

Simmon’s son basically did all the above.  His offical statement on the matter is whatever, everyone does it in comics.

“Like most artists I am inspired by work I admire. There are certain similarities between some of my work and the work of others. This was simply meant as an homage to artists I respect, and I definitely want to apologize to any Manga fans or fellow Manga artists who feel I went too far. My inspirations reflect the fact that certain fundamental imagery is common to all Manga. This is the nature of the medium.

“I am a big fan of Bleach, as well as other Manga titles. And I am certainly sorry if anyone was offended or upset by what they perceive to be the similarity between my work and the work of artists that I admire and who inspire me.” – Nick Simmons, sauce.

LoL, he doesn’t assume any blame and insults the manga community too.  He should stick to cosplay.  He’s good at impersonating Sado Yasutora (Bleach).
