Bamboo Blade | 01

Producers did a good job translating the manga to anime format. The jokes are snappier, overhauled the character designs, and show off some nice camera work. Praise the clever storyboarding. Expect some good laughs from this one.

Basically the teacher in charge of the kendo club is a loser. The sorry guy let the club membership twiddle down to a single member, and his financial sistuation is in an even worse state. He meets up with an old sempai who offers him a wager with a years worth of food (sushi) as the prize. All he has to do is beat his sempai’s kendo club with an all girls team.

Screencaps v1/v2, View, Veoh(raw)

For some reason, the seiyuu for the sensei sounds like Kamina from Tengen Toppa Gurren-Lagann (gawd that’s friggin’ long). It is Kamina’s seiyuu. :) Different from the typical action anime like how they show violence offscreen and is implied. Makes the unseen act more more sinister. Like when the bully beats up the kid who gives him the cellphone. The violent undertones, sudden wackiness, with subdued action is nice change of pace. They get the combination right unlike the painfully slow El Cazador. The CG car intro was a nice hook too. Brought back memories of Initial D though.

Covers chapters 1-5 of the comic.

See ANN for more production info.

I don’t know much about kendo, bu this one looks promising. The last few months of this year (and the first few months of the next) will be an awfully busy time for me, so I’m looking forward to a good crop of comedies to keep me sane during the winter season.

Yeah, this one is a surprise. You can feel they have experienced people working on the animation. The quality of the visuals and humor is excellent. Ah, now that I think about it, the humor is similar to Gintama. I can’t wait to see how they animate Kawazoe Tamaki’s fight. Hopefully they’ll elaborate on the skill she demonstrates on the three wild balls and falling teacher.

A small side note: it was hard to take screencaps of this episode because most of the humor/action is done offscreen. So it looks boring when it’s really the exact opposite. Takes some skill to pull that off. Who gets the credit? Director, screenwriter or the storyboarder?

( ゚ ヮ゚) There’s plenty of decent anime this Fall/Winter. No worries there.
